PORTSMOUTH – On Monday, May 3, President and Dr. Biden arrived in Hampton Roads as part of the administration’s Getting America Back on Track: American Families Plan Tour.
Their first stop was to Skip Krepcik’s classroom, where the professor teaches courses on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R). President and Dr. Biden warmly greeted the students while Professor Krepcik walked them through the technology that is being used to connect students to his classroom during the pandemic. Both President and Dr. Biden took the time to chat with each of the students to learn more about what brings them into the program.
Afterwards, President and Dr. Biden each took to the podium to discuss the president’s Getting America Back on Track: American Families Plan. Distinguished guests included Virginia First Lady Pamela Northam, Senator Timothy Kane (D-Va.), Rep. Elaine Luria, and Tidewater Community College’s president, Dr. Marcia Conston.
Dr. Biden elaborated on her time as a community college professor and the importance of schools like TCC. The president delivered remarks regarding his plan, which consists of free community college, free pre-k, and childcare assistance.
Dr. Conston later commented on how tuition costs, childcare, and affordable transportation are inhibiting factors that keep many students from attending a community college. She said, “Free tuition will eliminate so many barriers for our students.”
President Biden hopes to sign legislation shortly that would provide for students who hope to attend schools like Tidewater Community College.
“I think this is a great time for education,” said Dr. Conston.
