The National Weather Service in Wakefield issued a freeze warning for Hampton and Newport News for Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Temperatures in the region are expected to plummet into the lower 30s and mid-20s.
“That’ll be the first time for the eastern parts of Virginia,” said Alec Butner, meteorologist for the NWS Wakefield office which produces forecasts for southeast Virginia.
He added Richmond and western portions of Virginia have already seen freezing temperatures this fall.
Crops and other sensitive vegetation may be killed by the freezing temperatures but Butner said he doesn’t anticipate any other hazards.
The freeze warning is in effect between 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday, and will affect southeast Virginia, the Eastern Shore and northeast North Carolina.
