Newport News Shipbuilding gets millions added to sub contract

NEWPORT NEWS — The Newport News Shipbuilding division of Huntington Ingalls Industries recently received an additional $197 million to its existing Columbia-class submarine contract with General Dynamics’s Electric Boat division.

The original contract to build 12 new ballistic-missile submarines is worth up to $468 million, according to NNS’s announcement.

“This contract modification is critical in engaging the submarine industrial base as we continue our efforts to support starting full construction in Fiscal Year 2021,” said Jason Ward, vice president of Columbia-class construction at NNS.

According to NNS’s news release, the Columbia-class submarines (SSBN 826) will replace the Ohio-class submarines and be delivered to the Navy in 2028.
