If you hear a siren Friday morning, don’t panic

NEWPORT NEWS — Jefferson Labs is conducting a tornado warning test Friday.

The ‘wavering tone’, also known as a high-low-high, can last up to three minutes and be heard for approximately 1.5 miles.

According to the lab’s news release, the tests are conducted monthly so employees working outside can take cover in case of a nearby tornado.

“We put out releases to inform nearby businesses that it is not a true alarm and only a test,” Joshua Cameron, a communications staff member at the lab, wrote in an email.

The tornado warning siren test will be at 10:30 a.m.
