Local law enforcement to run for this charity

Newport News Police, Sheriff’s Office and Christopher Newport University police officers are running to raise money for Special Olympics Virginia Thursday.

The torch run is approximately 3.5 miles and is open to the public.

The event starts at 1 p.m. with a opening ceremony at Pomoco Stadium, 80 Moores Lnane, and ends at City Center. Read more about the 2018 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia here.

“We currently have about 50 law enforcement personnel signed up to run,” Jamie Bastas, NNPD senior communications specialist, wrote in an email.

So far, the team’s fundraising page has raised $177.

Participants must register online and sign the waiver in person. Register for the run here.

HAMPTON

The city’s Police and Sheriff’s Office will also participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run on Thursday, starting around 9:30 a.m. from Peninsula Town Center and ending at the WAWA convenience store in Newmarket Square, according to the police department’s news release.

It is unclear if the run is open to the public, the distance of the torch run and the duration of the event.
