Some taxis are giving free rides to seniors on Election Day

Coastal Ride and the Yellow Cab of Hampton is giving senior citizens free rides to the voting polls in Newport News and Hampton on Nov. 6.

The service is open to registered voters 60 years and older.

In order to get this free service, seniors need to call the Peninsula Agency on Aging to give their telephone number, pickup address, voting location and request their pick up time.

“Depending on demand, pick up times may be shuffled, and riders may need to share a cab,” said Frank Azzalina, director of business development for Yellow Cab and Coastal Ride on the Peninsula.

Azzalina said taxis will pick up seniors, wait for the seniors to cast their ballots at the polling station and riders will be asked to sign a “voucher.”

Deadline to request a ride is Nov. 5.
