This bistro closed after five months. Here’s why

NEWPORT NEWS — Boulevard Bistro is now closed.

The comfort food restaurant opened in May and according to the restaurant’s website, served breakfast “all day”.

Five months later, the bistro closed the day after Labor Day, said Nathan Jirastith, the former owner.

He previously worked as a general manger for Carolina BBQ in Yorktown and before that, head chef at Holy Mackerel Seafood & Smokehouse, also in Yorktown.

This was his first restaurant.

Kim Lee, the city’s communications manager, said Boulevard Bistro did not receive any financial incentives from the city.

“We gave them nothing,” she wrote in an email.

The building was previously occupied by Joe & Mimma’s Italian Restaurant, which opened in 1973 and closed after 43 years in June 2016.

Jarastith said he does not plan on re-opening Boulevard Bistro any time soon and that he would do a couple things differently if he decided to open another restaurant.

“ABC license should have been the first thing I did before I even opened the doors. Advertising should have started before I opened the doors as well,” he said. “Maybe in a couple years I’ll re open but for right now, no.”

When asked about the hardest and easiest things he dealt with at the restaurant?

“There was nothing easy about opening a new restaurant,” he said.

The Boulevard Bistro, 694 J. Clyde Morris Blvd. is now vacant and the building is now available to lease.
