HAMPTON — The Hampton Mayor’s Book Club with the help of Healthy Families is looking for volunteer readers and sponsors.
The book club addresses early literacy and focuses on reading as a core value, according to a news release from the city.
Supported through public and private partnerships, the book club is dedicated to helping children have a healthy start in life and enter school ready to learn.
Book club activities promote early literacy, improve the social and emotional development of young children and increase the likelihood that children grow up in an environment where books are available and literacy is valued.
From September through May, the mayor and community volunteers read a selected book-of-the-month to nearly 4,000 children in approximately 200 preschool, kindergarten and first-grade classrooms.
Each child in a preschool class gets a copy of the selected book.
Kindergarten and first grade classrooms get two copies for their classroom and library, and parents get a monthly newsletter with tips on how to bring that month’s story to life.
No special skills are required.
Go online to volunteer to be a reader or to get more information.
You can also go online to help sponsor the program.
