Newport News Police to host a National Night Out kick-off

NEWPORT NEWS — This city’s Neighborhood Watch Coalition and Target are partnering with the police department and other city agencies to host a special kick-off event on Saturday.

The event is to get the community excited about “National Night Out” on Tuesday.

The Saturday gathering will be in the Target parking lot, 12130 Jefferson Ave., 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Newport News Police Command Bus, meet members of the police Marine Patrol and K-9 Unit, enjoy live music and participate in family friendly games and activities.

Following the Saturday kickoff, residents and members of the police department join forces on Tuesday, 6 – 8:30 p.m. as the city participates in the 35th Annual National Night Out.

Neighborhoods throughout the city have planned National Night Out activities and are encouraging their neighbors to come together to fight crime, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police and community relations.

At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, members of the Newport News Police Department will gather at Police Headquarters for a proclamation reading in honor of National Night Out.

Following the reading, department personnel will tour the city and meet residents in their neighborhoods.

The events promote community-police partnerships and camaraderie between neighbors with the understanding that by working together neighborhoods become a safer, better place to live, organizers said.

A similar event will take place in Hampton on Tuesday, 4 to 7 p.m., at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.
