The joint hiring process for Newport News and Hampton Fire divisions is now open.

The hiring process, which started on July 20, is open for dual-role personnel firefighter/medics who rotate their emergency response duties between ambulance and fire apparatus, according to the City of Newport News.

Because of their dual-role responsibilities, firefighter/medic recruits are required to successfully graduate from two separate structured recruit training programs – the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy and the college-level Emergency Medical Services course.

After a six-month hiring process that includes a written test, a physical abilities test and interviews, the recruit training program will begin after the new year.

Recruits are hired as full time city employees prior to the start of the recruit training program.

Upon completion of Fire and EMS programs, firefighter/medics average 10 working days per month.

Requirements and disqualifiers are available on Hampton’s website and Newport News’ website.

The hiring process will close on Aug. 17.
