HAMPTON — The Virginia Peninsula Food Bank will be having their kickoff event for the summer meal program Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

It’s to raise awareness of the need for feeding children over the summer when school is not in session, said Karen Joyner, the food bank’s chief executive officer.

At the beginning of the event, which will start at the food bank, Carl Francis from the Hampton Roads Youth Foundation will speak.

Francis is also the director of communications for the NFL Players Association and has served there since January of 1994.

He and the football players will then follow a food truck to Hampton Community Townhomes (formerly, Seldendale Townhomes) to serve children lunch from the food bank’s mobile feeding van.

While the food bank comes to the townhomes daily, this particular occurrence will have football players Rashaad Coward from Chicago Bears and possibly Trenton Cannon from the New York Jets.

Coward is a former ODU football player and Cannon is a Kecoughtan High graduate, Joyner said.

In addition to the football players and Francis, representatives from Virginia No Kid Hungry will be here.

Hampton Vice Mayor Linda Curtis and Newport News Assistant Mayor Tina Vick will be there as well.
