As the summer heat sets in, libraries and cooling centers provide a respite from the scorching conditions.
In Newport News, people can go to the local libraries and recreation centers when they need to cool down, said Kim Lee, a media representative for the city.
Both the libraries and recreation centers have various operating hours, Lee said.
The same goes for local libraries and recreation centers in Hampton, according to the city.
Another option is the Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodgings and Provisions extreme heat shelter in Hampton.
The shelter operates a temporary cooling center, when the National Weather Service issues “Extreme Heat” advisories.
The temporary cooling center operates out of a mobile van that services both residents and the Hampton Roads homeless population.
Temperatures that are expected to be in the high 90s, with the humidity pushing the heat index as high as 105 degrees, receive that distinction.
Last week, there were two such days.
Locals might catch a break this week as temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, according to weather.com.
