Cop shoots, kills ‘vicious’ dog

HAMPTON — A pit bull police here say attacked and bit a woman Thursday morning was shot and killed by an officer.

It started with a call police responded to in the 1400 block of Woodcrest Drive at 11:41 a.m. “in reference to a vicious pit bull.”

“The pit bull had attacked and bitten an adult female within her own property and was now roaming the area unattended in the area of the 1400 block of Woodcrest Drive,” police wrote in a news release.

An officer found the dog and tried to capture it with a “catch pole,” but the pit bull charged at the officer.

Authorities said the officer “retreated to the front of his marked patrol vehicle,” but the pit bull continued to charge.

Police said “fearing for his own safety, and for the safety of the community,” the officer shot the dog.

The dog died, the officer was not injured, and the woman was treated for the dog bite.

Police are investigating the incident.
