HAMPTON — Each year approximately 750 airmen are assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis for their first assignment, said Bruce Sturk, the director of Federal Facility Support for the city.
These young people are usually in their early 20s and are away from home for the first time, he said.
The city has created a program where residents can adopt those airmen to give them the chance to create connections in their new community and find support when they need it.
The Adopt an Airman program has typically 140 families, Sturk said, and the needs ebb and flow throughout the year.
Sometimes there are too many families and sometimes there are too many airmen, he said, and right now there happens to be not enough families.
Sturk is always looking for more participants for the program and even though not all 750 airmen will enroll he wants to make sure they have options.
Any family can apply for the program, even single individuals who are looking to donate their time to help out a young airman.
