Here’s how you can safely get rid of your unwanted documents

NEWPORT NEWS — The city is hosting a shred-a-thon for residents to get rid of unwanted documents.

The Newport News Sheriff’s Office will have its 11th annual Shred Day from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on June 16 at Todd Stadium.

Among the items the sheriff’s office is encouraging to shred include sensitive documents and mail with your name, address, account information, e-mail address, telephone number, etc.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, last year Virginia ranked 20th in the nation in the total number of identity theft reports.

During last year’s shred event, the sheriff’s office shredded over 25,000 pounds of paper.
