Police want to know who shot this 6-year-old girl during a cookout

NEWPORT NEWS — A 6-year-old girl was shot in the leg while in a cookout here Saturday night.

No suspects have been named in the incident which was reported at around 9:22 p.m.

Newport News Police said the girl was having a cookout with other people in the 5600 block of Arlington Avenue when she was shot.

Sgt. Randall Bailey said witnesses at the scene told officers of hearing approximately 10 gunshots prior to the girl being injured.

She was taken to a local hospital to be treated. Police said it was a “non-life-threatening” injury.

Additional information about the incident was not immediately released.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to call the Crime Line at 888-LOCK-U-UP.
