The Virginia Marine Police have recovered a body they believe is that of a man who fell off the cargo ship Lara Venture in March.

Authorities said the body was found by a commercial fisherman Friday morning in Mobjack Bay near the base of the York River.

Marine Police Capt. Jamie Green said there are some indications the body is that of a 33-year-old Chinese crewman who fell off the 770-foot cargo ship Lara Venture March 13 near Cape Charles, but that can only be confirmed by the state medical examiner.

The Coast Guard said the man fell around 2:10 a.m. while fastening a ladder on the anchored ship’s starboard. He was not wearing a life jacket, but wore orange coveralls and a dark blue jacket, according to the Coast Guard.

An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina and crews from Coast Guard Cutter Sea Horse and Station Cape Charles searched the area for about 12 hours.

The search covered about 112 square miles, and was suspended later in the day because of “several factors” including water temperature, weather conditions, and length of time the person has been missing, the Coast Guard said.
