Here are a few things you need to know about Newport News’ fiscal year 2019 budget

NEWPORT NEWS — The city approved its fiscal year 2019 budget at last week’s City Council meeting.

The fiscal year will begin on July 1 and run until June 30, 2019.

Here are a few important things you need to know about the city’s budget:

  • The city’s general fund increased to $486.5 million, a $451,000 increase from 2018.
  • There were no tax increases. Real estate tax, meal tax, property tax and public utility tax will remain level.
  • The city approved the school board’s request of $719,000 increase in funding. The additional funding will go toward “school operations,” according to the budget. The proposed school board fiscal year 2019 budget focuses on staffing needs in three areas: english as a second language, school counseling and HVAC maintenance.
  • The city is allocating $190,000 to the police department for the storage of body camera videos.
  • The budget funds the addition of one EMS Education Coordinator position for the fire department in the amount $72,000. The coordinator will manage continuing education, training and the evaluation of programs for EMS, according to the budget.
