Are you prepared for an active shooter? Local officials go through training

NEWPORT NEWS — Local city officials prepped for how to deal with an active shooter at a recent joint meeting.

Representatives from the city’s police, fire, school district and emergency management department had a combined active threat training program, according to a news release from the city.

At the program, officials shared information on response plans and discussed each department’s capabilities during a time of crisis.

Jeffrey Nelson, supervisor of Security and Emergency Management for Newport News Public Schools, discussed how the Crisis Management Team would function during an active shooter situation.
All staff for the various departments are required to review the active shooter plan annually, according to the news release.
Emergency Medical Technicians also discussed the different types of medical evacuation methods and Newport News Police officers reviewed policies when it comes to active shooters and other life-threatening events, according to the news release.
