Newport News Police Department to serve community in a unique way

The Newport News Police Department is going to protect and serve… dinner.

The Newport News Police Department and Sheriff’s Office will serve as waiters and waitresses from 5 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday,  April 19 at Plaza Azteca, 12099 Jefferson Avenue, according to a news release from the department.

All tips raised by the officers will go to Special Olympics Virginia, which provides year-round athletic training and competition for athletes of all ages with and without intellectual disabilities in Virginia, according to its website.

Special Olympics Virginia has three locations, including one in Virginia Beach.

The “Tip-a-Cop” is one of the many events of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run campaign for Special Olympics, according to the news release.
