WILLIAMSBURG— The Golfweek Amateur Tour will be making a stop at Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe on Aug. 3 and 4, where players from across the United States will try and earn ranking points for a shot at the National Championship.
The Golfweek Amateur Tour was launched in 1995 as a way for amateurs of all ages, sexes, and handicaps to compete in stroke-play tournaments on a regular basis. The tour concludes each season with a national championship on the line.
The tour is the oldest and largest amateur tour in the United States and aims to provide an atmosphere of friendly competition against other amateur golfers.
On Aug 3 and 4, Golden Horseshoe Golf Club will host the Virginia Regional for the third straight year. According to Lyle Joyner, the tournament’s regional director, many will be competing this weekend.
“We have three players who played on the Tidewater Tour years ago visiting this weekend to play in the Regional, Kim and Rich Vincent from Florida now, and Kevin Bruck from Colorado. The top players in the Current Tidewater Points Races are all playing this weekend and trying to make a move. Players are visiting from the following tours: South Flordia; Mississippi; Richmond; Denver; Washington, D.C.; New Jersey; Philadelphia; Michigan East; Cincinnati/Dayton; Augusta, Georgia; Eastern, North Carolina; Orlando, Florida; Columbus, Ohio; Cleveland/Akron,” Joyner said.
Golfers who join the tour are seeded using current handicaps. The handicaps are split into a championship flight, and the A, B, C, and D flights. Each player earns points depending on where they finish in the tournament standings. Those points tally over the course of the season and those with the highest points are invited to the national championship.
In the 2023 Virginia Regional, Matthew Spruill of Tidewater won the championship flight, Gary Johnson of Mississippi won the A flight, Jeremy Huff of Tidewater won the B flight, Michael Mathisen of Richmond won the C flight, and Jimmie Williams of Richmond won the D flight.
Spruill, Huff, and Williams are competing again this year to defend their titles.
On the line is a shot at earning a berth to compete at the Golfweek Amateur Tour National Championship, set for Oct. 18-20 in Hilton Head, South Carolina. There are also gift cards and prize money up for grabs.
