JAMES CITY COUNTY — The driver a tractor trailer has been charged following an early morning crash in James City County.
Preliminary investigations conducted by Virginia State Police (VSP) have shown that at around 2:54 a.m. on Oct. 4, the driver of the tractor trailer, 62-year-old Wayne R. Norwood, was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 (I-64) in James City County near mile marker 225 when he took his eyes off the roadway.
At that time, he came upon the dump truck that was traveling in the same direction. Norwood attempted to avoid the dump truck by swerving off the roadway but still made contact with its rear.
As a result, the tractor trailer jackknifed across the roadway, blocking all lanes of traffic westbound. Norwood refused medical treatment at the scene.
The driver of the dump truck, Latoya Johnson of Newport News, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported from the scene.
Initially, all westbound lanes of traffic were shut down but were reopened later in the morning.
Norwood has been charged with reckless driving/failure to maintain proper control of one’s vehicle.
