YORKTOWN — York County announced that the LOVE art installation that has sporadically been on display at Riverwalk Landing over the last several years is now a permanent fixture.
The LOVE sign is located between Water Street Grille, 323 Water Street, and the Yorktown Freight Shed, 331 Water Street, and open to the public for photo opportunities.
The letters, which are more than six feet tall a piece and a total of sixteen feet wide, are an extension of the long-standing Virginia Is For Lovers campaign from Virginia Tourism.
The Yorktown piece is one of 300 permanent installations of the word throughout the Commonwealth.
Before it became a permanent fixture, the York County Tourism Board rented the letters from Virginia Tourism in order to garner support for its riverfront events, such as the Fall and Mistletoe markets.
Now that the letters are permanent, the county will be able to decorate the piece with themes corresponding to seasons, holidays and events.
“We are definitely a unique destination,” said Kristi Olsen, York County’s Tourism Development Manager. “There are so many vastly different reasons a person may fall in love with Yorktown. There’s of course the history and our ties to the American Revolution, but then we also have our location which puts us right along the York River. Not only can we say our restaurants serve some of the freshest seafood and we offer up an amazing view, but we also have the local history of the watermen and purveyors.”
