WILLIAMSBURG — The William & Mary (W&M) Theatre Department’s latest production takes the cast both on stage and on the field.
The department is kicking off the season with “The Wolves” by Sarah DeLappe, which follows a girls’ high school soccer team during their warm-ups as they navigate life’s difficult questions.
In conversations ranging from Harry Potter to hangovers, the audience will learn about each team member as they come together to score some goals.
“As the show goes on, and we see them and get to know them, we see the closeness of the
team holding them together,” Director Laurie J. Wolf said.
According to a Sept. 20 release from W&M Theatre, the show features an all-female cast and core creative team that has grown a tight-knit bond both on stage and off, beginning with the audition process.
“We asked everyone to come prepared [to auditions] with a soccer warm-up to teach. When they presented, the entire group was fully engaged, and supporting each other,” Wolf said. “It was unbelievable the solidarity. It was just magic.”
The show’s rehearsals look a bit different than most, taking the cast off the stage and on to the W&M practice soccer fields, running real drills and playing scrimmages so the actors look authentic during the soccer practice warm-ups scenes.
“Having the immediacy of people working together and having an audience, there’s that
energy,” Wolf said.
“The Wolves” will run Oct. 7-10 at the Kimball Theatre in Colonial Williamsburg, at 7:30pm Thursday-Saturday, and a Sunday matinee at 2:00pm.
