UPDATE (Sept. 20, 2021 at 3:13 p.m.): Newport News Police (NNPD) have reported the suspected individual has been arrested off school property. The department also reports that the individuals involved knew each other. Both individuals reported as shot suffered non-life-threatening injuries. In addition to the two students who were shot, there was another student who broke their arm during the evacuation. At this time, the NNPD is turning the scene over to the investigative unit as the case remains ongoing.
UPDATE (Sept. 20, 2021 at 2:37 p.m.): Newport News Police (NNPD) has reported that a 17-year-old male and a 17-year-old female were shot. The suspect is not in custody and the police believe that person to no longer be in the school. NNPD is searching the school and collecting evidence at this time.
NEWPORT NEWS — Heritage High School in southeast Newport News has been evacuated after reports were made that there was a shooting at the school.
According to Sarah Ketchum, senior communications specialist with the Newport News Police Department (NNPD), students are being evacuated to the tennis courts on campus where parents can pick them up.
Police are currently on scene and gathering information.
