YORK COUNTY –The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that a traffic shift and lane closures are scheduled starting tonight on Interstate 64 (I-64) east between Lightfoot (exit 234) through the Route 143/Camp Peary interchange (exit 238).

Starting overnight as early as Wednesday, Sept. 15, project crews will shift eastbound traffic in this section of the I-64 corridor from the inside lanes onto the newly paved center and right travel lanes to allow for the placement of the final surface layer of pavement on the inside lanes.

Work crews will alternate single-lane closures eastbound in this section of the interstate  starting as early as 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., as well as implement brief stoppages overnight to transition the traffic safely to the new lanes. Additionally, a full ramp closure will be in place on the Route 143/Merrimac Trail on-ramp to I-64 east on the same evening from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

There will also be ramp closures on Thursday, Sept. 16, from Route 143/Merrimac Trail to the 199/Humelsine Parkway (exit 243) as paving operations continue.

Additional traffic shifts and closures through the rest of the project corridor will continue to take place over the next couple of months as crews finish the final surface paving operations on both the new and reconstructed lanes, creating a smooth driving surface across all lanes by the end of the year.

VDOT reminds motorists to obey the reduced work zone speed limit and drive with caution when traveling in the project work zone, especially when navigating the upcoming new traffic patterns.
