JAMES CITY COUNTY — In an effort to combat auto theft, the James City County Police Department, in partnership with the Virginia State Police, will host a VIN etching event on Thursday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Target parking lot on Monticello Avenue.
Vin etching is a process in which a chemical is used to permanently mark a car or motorcycle window with the vehicle identification number. The process takes about 10 minutes to complete and does not effect the appearance of the car.
Marking each window on a vehicle creates another obstacle for a would-be car thief because each window with the VIN number on it would need to be replaced before selling the car.
The program is free and open to the public. For more information on the process check out the video on the VSP website.
