YORK COUNTY — On Friday, June 11, the Peninsula Health District (PHD) announced that a racoon found in York County tested positive for the rabies virus.
The racoon was found in Seven Hollys Drive and Link Road area of Dare in York County.
The PHD advises that anyone who may have information regarding exposure to this animal through bite, scratch or contact with saliva by open wound or eyes, nose or mouth should contact the Environmental Health office of the PHD at (757) 594-7340.
It is important to note that exposure considerations should also be taken into account for pets who may have had contact with the animal.
PHD states that its local office will be contacting residents in the immediate vicinity of where the racoon was found as well as any civic or homeowner’s associations in that community.
Rabies can be a fatal yet preventable disease that is carried by mammals. It has been found in wild animal populations around the Hampton Roads Peninsula since the mid-1980’s.
The health district would like to remind residents to follow these important guidelines:
- Make sure that your pets’ rabies vaccinations are current.
- Report all exposures to animals (usually bites and scratches) to your doctor and local health department.
- Do not feed or encourage wildlife to visit your premises. Animals to keep in mind include foxes, racoons, and skunks.
- Do not feed your own animals outside, leave your trash uncovered, or do anything that may attract wild animals onto your property.
