JAMES CITY COUNTY — The James City County Parks and Recreation Department have packed the month of June to the gills with programs and events.

In a calendar broken down by category, JCC Parks and Recreation will be offering no shortage of free and paid activities that will have something for every age group.

For those looking to engage their child’s artistic side JCC will feature a Father’s Day Gift Making Workshop, chocolate making class for preschoolers as well as a tropical summer themed cookie decorating for elementary and middle school aged kids. All of these classes will be offered at the James City County Recreation Center.

In the health and wellness arena the Recreation Center will offer a Intro to Yoga For Teens class as well as a youth weight training clinic. The yoga class will meet each Monday in June with the intent to help teenagers build confidence in their yoga practice along with techniques of mindfulness and value.

The youth weight training class will take place on Tuesday, June 26. The one hour class taught by a certified personal trainer will teach teenagers age 15-17 proper movement, form, safe techniques, etiquette of lifting and age appropriate weight training.

June is a month that lends itself to being outdoors and there are no shortages of facilities and programs geared towards that lifestyle.

Both of the James City County outdoor pools, at Chickahominy Riverfront Park (CRP) and Upper County Park (UCP), opened for the season over Memorial Day weekend. Both pools are limited as to how many patrons can be in the pool area at once, 115 for CRP and 105 for UCP. Once the pools get capacity there will be a waiting list and would be pool goers will have to wait in a nearby shelter for their party to be called.

Other events and classes include guided canoe tours on Powhatan Creek and the James River, bird watching along Bassett Trace Nature Trail, adult row programs and many more.
