Local Credit Union Awards Scholarships to York County Seniors

YORK COUNTY — Every year, Langley Federal Credit Union awards a handful of $5,000 need-based scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have excelled in academics and have shown commitment and service to their communities. This year, three out of the four scholarship winners hale from York County.

Elijah Smith, a soon to be graduate of Bruton High School, will head off to Dartmouth College this fall. During his time at Bruton, Elijah was captain of both the cross country and track teams. He also interned with a Virginia delegate campaign and founded the Teen Coalition for the Climate. When not in school, he played the guitar and mandolin for his church and worked at the William & Mary Bookstore.

Esther Sun will matriculate from Tabb High School to the University of Virginia where she plans to earn a degree in biochemistry. While attending Tabb, Esther was a regular on the local science fair circuit. She also played varsity volleyball, tutored other students in math and was a member of Mu Alpha Theta, a national high school mathematics honor society.

Jennifer Zhang, is headed north to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While attending Grafton High School, she has been a member of three academic honor societies, the swim team and the debate club. As well as excelling academically, Jennifer has given much of her time and effort around the county volunteering with the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank, the Poquoson and Tabb libraries and Thrive Peninsula.

Congratulations to these three York County School Division seniors!
