JAMES CITY COUNTY — In the early hours of Sunday, May 23, Virginia State Police (VSP) were called to investigate a single vehicle crash on Interstate 64 (I-64) in James City County, which left two with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
At approximately 3:55 a.m., a 2012 Hyundai Veracruz was traveling with five passengers eastbound on I-64. The vehicle ran off the road at around mile marker 232, striking several trees, overturning and then catching fire.
Three occupants were able to escape while the driver, Natoria Ann Walker, 32, of Newport News, and another female passenger were trapped in the vehicle.
Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were able to put out the fire and extract Walker and the other passenger. One of the women was transported to Medical College of Virginia (MCV) via Nightingale and the other was taken to the same hospital by ground transportation. Both women suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Walker has been charged with reckless driving/failure to maintain proper control of the vehicle and for not wearing a seatbelt.
The crash is still under investigation by VSP.
