YORK COUNTY — Registration for the York County’s 27th Annual Safety Town begins on Monday, May 24 for county residents and Tuesday, June 1 for nonresidents.

The award-winning summer program aims to teach rising kindergarteners various aspects of safety, culminating with its “mini-town” set up that lets children put their new skills to the test using tricycles to “ride the town.”

Safety skills that will be taught during the program include: traffic and pedestrian safety, recognizing road signs, and safe skills on the roadway.

This year, Safety Town will look a little different than in years past. Instead of taking place entirely in person, a live webinar will be held July 12-15 from 9-10:30 a.m. Children will enjoy three safety lessons each day with two additional lessons taught through pre-recorded videos. The webinar will feature guest speakers, props, and even an instructional puppet show.

Additional parent resources will be available online will include: videos, printable materials, as well as hands-on activities to do with their children.

At the time of registration, parents can schedule their child to experience Safety Town’s “mini-town,” which will be set up at York Middle School, in a specific timeslot during the week-long program Monday through Thursday afternoons or during the day that Friday.

Safety Town was initially canceled in 2020 when Governor Northam issued phase 3 guidelines on July 1. After which, the county’s staff worked hard to adapt the program for a virtual environment. As a result, the program was able to launch online last August.

All participants will receive a Safety Town kit that will include a backpack, helmet, t-shirt and daily activity packets to use during the week.

The cost for registration is $20 for county residents and $30 for nonresidents. To register, visit www.yorkcounty.gov/parksandrec or call York County Parks and Recreation at 757-890-3500.
