WILLIAMSBURG — The College of William & Mary is being recognized for increasing diversity and inclusion in its Study Abroad program.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) has awarded its 2020 IIE Seal of Excellence to William & Mary for making its study abroad program more accessible for its students.
Founded in 1919, IIE is a nonprofit organization that focuses on international education and creating programs of study and training for students and educators. IIE manages over 200 of these programs with participants from over 180 countries.
William & Mary is a partner in IIE’s five-year Generation Study Abroad (GSE) initiative, which launched in 2014 with a mission of growing and diversifying the number of U.S. study abroad students by the end of the decade.
The university received the 2020 IIE Seal of Excellence award after meeting IIE’s goal of increasing overall study abroad participation by 17% since joining GSE in 2014 and by doubling the amount of scholarships received.
William & Mary is one of nineteen institutions receiving the award this year.
Among some of the efforts to diversify its Study Abroad program, the university has granted over $650,000 in scholarships each year and created shorter term programs in the winter and spring semesters to make study abroad more accessible for STEM students and students with financial needs.
