WILLIAMSBURG — Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has partnered with several Williamsburg-area restaurants to provide a certificate program for a workforce pathway program in culinary arts.
This 6-month intensive program will be taught in two phases, with the first portion taking place in a classroom setting and the second a three month mentorship with one of the local restaurant partners. An additional bonus is that students will be paid during their mentorship.
Throughout the program, students will learn techniques and concepts to prepare them for entering the food service industry or to continue on into another culinary arts education program. Some of these concepts include: knife skills, equipment operation, kitchen mathematics, food allergies, kitchen and food safety, as well as the handling and preparation of various food types.
The mentorship portion of the program will partner students with Williamsburg-area restaurateurs. During this, students will be paid to work 32-40 hours a week while receiving on-the-job training in the field.
The classroom portion will take place from Aug. 2-Oct. 21, 2021 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Chapel, 3899 John Tyler Hwy. The paid mentorship will take place from Oct. 22, 2021-Jan. 3, 2022.
The program is open to any Virginia Peninsula resident. The cost is for tuition is $2,795. Application deadline is May 28, 2021. Partial scholarships are available as well as financial assistance through the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA) for qualified students.
