JAMES CITY COUNTY — What began as an Etsy shop in 2014 is finally getting a physical home. Vintage Summers, Ltd., a store specializing in repurposed vintage home décor, jewelry and collectibles is having a grand opening for its brick and mortar shop, located at 3303 Poplar Creek Lane.
The store’s owner, Sue Summers, said that she started the Etsy shop so that she could earn a living from home and spend time with her children.
“I’ve always had a fascination with old and vintage items. My cousin and I spent our childhood digging through our grandmother and grandfather’s attic,” Summers said.
The online store grew considerably since 2014, with over 1,400 sales. When the pandemic hit, Summers said that with many of her kids still at home, the store began to take over the house.
“I always wanted to have a brick and mortar store but it never seemed like a financially feasible thing to do,” Summer said. “But the store is taking over the entire house.”
While looking into climate controlled storage spaces, Summers found the location at 3303 Poplar Creek Lane; an ideal place next to the post office. After taking the scary leap into opening a physical space, Vintage Summers Ltd. is set to have an official opening next week.
While the online shop will continue to stock vintage home décor and collectibles, the physical store will also house items from vendors, such as Virginia Creamery Candle Co., Lotus and Luna, and other items from local artists.
Vintage Summer Ltd. also has a mission to give back to the community. The store will also carry smudge sticks that will include proper instructions, with proceeds benefitting the Mattaponi and Pamunkey kids’ college funds.
Meanwhile, the store plans to eventually sell hardwood saplings in vintage planters, with all the proceeds going to the Mariner’s Museum.
“I want the store to reflect my values of why I love vintage,” Summers said.
The store will have a soft opening on Tuesday, May 2. The official grand opening is set for Saturday, May 8, complete with light refreshments provided by Magnolia Café. The event will also have a raffle and gift giveaways to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Vintage Summers Ltd. will be open Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. To browse the Etsy shop, click here. To visit the store’s Facebook page, click here.
