JAMES CITY COUNTY — On Tuesday, April 27, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that a portion of the Virginia Capital Trail (VCT) will be temporarily closed.

The wooden bridge that is located near Jamestown High School between Eagle Way and the Jamestown leg of VCT will be closed approximately 2-3 weeks in order to replace the decking on the bridge. Construction will be performed as weather permits.

The decking on the bridge will be replaced by planks that have an epoxy coating, which will provide additional friction for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, this coating will extend the longevity of the bridge.

While crews started gathering onsite on April 19, their work will not impact use of the bridge until construction begins on May 10.

VDOT advises that trail users use alternative routes during construction, including a signed detour on the Greensprings Interpretative Trail. Also during construction, cyclists will be permitted to utilize the same trail, though portions of this trail are gravel, not paved.
