JAMES CITY COUNTY –– Once again, Here for the Girls (H4TG) is hosting their annual ‘Breast Ball’ Golf Tournament.

The event is one of the three primary fundraising events by this local non-profit.

“I really love any time we’re able to get out there and interact with the community,” said Vicki Vawter, manager of outreach and engagement for HFTG.

Last year, the tournament was postponed from its usual April date to July because of the pandemic, Vawter said.

She noted that H4TG has about 300 players participating each year, and, despite the pandemic, this year is no different.

“We’re really fortunate to be able to have it this year,” Vawter said. “It gives local businesses a chance to work side by side, too.”

Joe Ortiz has been participating in the tournament for the past 10 years. He said that the tournament became a personal affair when his wife, Joyce, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.

“It’s hard for a person to hear the words, ‘I have cancer.’ It’s even harder when you’re the one fighting it,” Joe Ortiz said.

Joyce Ortiz now works as an ambassador for Here for the Girls, providing support for other women in their battle against breast cancer. She was a model for the organization’s 2020 calendar, which provides breast health resources and information to the public. One of the resources available through H4TG are support groups for the organization’s members.

“It’s important to know it’s valuable for women to be around others who have shared experiences,” Joyce Ortiz said.

This year, Hudgins Contracting Corp is sponsoring the event.

Here for the Girls’ ‘Breast Ball’ Golf Tournament is at Ford Colony’s Country Club, located at 240 Ford’s Colony Drive on Friday, April 16.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a tee time of 8 a.m.
