WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg Community Foundation announced on March 22 that Chesapeake Bank will sponsor one college scholarship for a Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools student.

The $1,000 scholarship goes to a student that plans to pursue a career in banking or in financial services, according to the news release.

“The WJCC Scholarship Fund at the Williamsburg Community Foundation is a community-wide effort to recognize the accomplishments of local students and help families afford higher education,” according to the press release. “Scholarships are made possible by individuals, families, businesses, civic groups and high school parent-teacher-student associations.”

The announcement noted that the WJCC Scholarship Fund, previously known as the Lafayette Education Fund, was founded in 1974 and “awards 50-60 scholarships annually.”

Ginny Gasink, spokesperson for the WCF, said that the scholarship is typically awarded the first Sunday in June. However, there is no set date for the ceremony and that the foundation may have to adjust due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She added that the deadline for the scholarship was March 14.

For more information about the scholarships can be found on the Williamsburg Community Foundation’s website or by calling 757-259-1660.
