JAMESTOWN — From Saturday, March 20 through Sunday, March 21, Jamestown Settlement hosted its long running event, Military Through the Ages. After having to cancel last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum was determined to bring it back for 2021, but with a new twist to keep guests, volunteers, and staff safe.
Though there weren’t nearly as many living history groups in attendance, the absence was hardly noticeable throughout the event. Guests could still traverse the grounds from encampment to encampment while learning about the various eras of military history that were represented. A cloud of wood smoke filled the air, the sounds of period appropriate live music excited the listeners, and living historians zealously taught guests about the different units and eras that they were representing. There was plenty of space for social distancing, hand sanitizing stations were set up in abundance, and masks were required throughout the indoor and outdoor exhibits.
