WILLIAMSBURG — A drive-in movie theater is coming to Williamsburg as part of the William & Mary Global Film Festival.
The festival, which is celebrating its fourteenth year, will host drive-in movies, outdoor screenings, as well as a virtual festival for the first time ever, according to the Global Film Festival news release on Wednesday.
From March 25-28, this socially-distanced festival will hold nightly drive-in screenings at the Palace Farms Drive-in starting at 8 p.m. The films for this year’s fest are sponsored by Colonial Williamsburg. The movies all 2021 Academy Award-nominated films, including “Quo Vadis, Aida,” “Minari”, “Another Round,” and “News of the World.”
Tickets are $25 per car.
In addition to the drive-in experience, there will also be an online festival featuring more than 30 films along question and answer discussions that will include special guests. With the purchase of a $35 festival pass, Williamsburg cinephiles will be able to watch newly-premiered movies from the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, including “Strawberry Mansion,” “Misha and the Wolves” and “Ma Belle My Beauty.”
The festival will also include critically-acclaimed international films, such as “Collective,” “Night of the Kings,” “Sun Children” and “Dear Comrades!” Films from William & Mary alumni will also be screened, including “Underplayed,” “Unmarked” and “The Passing On.”
The festival will host 20 workshops and conversations with William & Mary alumni, “Watchmen” and “The Good Place” writer Cord Jefferson ‘04, talent agent Phil Sun ‘04, and business executive and author Beth Comstock ‘82.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, an additional set of films will be screened for only W&M students and staff. Films such as the Oscar-nominated “Promising Young Woman” and “Lupin III: The First” will be screened for free at the outdoor Martha Wren Briggs Amphitheatre on campus.
