Virginia State Police are investigating a crash Tuesday morning that left an 18-year-old man with serious injuries.
At approximately 8:31 a.m., the state police were called to investigate a two vehicle accident involving a VDOT sign repair truck and a Chevrolet Blazer on Merrimac Trail and Armstrong Drive.
The driver of the Chevrolet Blazer, Sterling Piggott, 18 from Williamsburg, was traveling westbound on Merrimac Trail when he drifted into the eastbound lanes of travel, striking a VDOT sign repair truck head on, according to the news release from state police.
The impact of the crash caused the VDOT truck to be pushed into the ditch and overturn, authorities said.
Police said Piggott was flown to Norfolk Sentara Hospital with life threatening injuries and has been charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain proper control of vehicle.
The driver of the VDOT truck, Douglas Wittekind, 66 of Newport News was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post they are assisting state police with traffic control.
“All lanes are shut down at this time so the helicopter can land,” according to YPSO’s Facebook post.
Authorities said the investigation is still ongoing.
