Authorities have detained a suspect in the early morning shooting of an off-duty Gloucester County sheriff’s deputy in the Yorktown area.
Jordan Edmonds Hilliard, 21, from Hampton, was arrested and charged with 12 offenses, including attempted capital murder and aggravated malicious wounding, according to a news release from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
Hilliard is currently being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
At 4:02 a.m. deputies were dispatched to the 100 Block of Leslie Lane in the Tabb Lakes subdivision for a report of a shooting. It appears that someone was breaking into vehicles, and the deputy — who lives in the community — confronted the person and was shot, YPSO said in a news release on Monday.
The deputy was taken to the hospital and was listed in stable condition late Monday morning.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Deputy who is recovering, his family, and our community,” said Sheriff J.D. “Danny” Diggs in a news release from the YPSO.
