The building Williams-Sonoma used to occupy in Merchants Square has been vacant Since Jan. 26.

But finally a new business calls the space home.

At least for now.

Williamsburg Merchants Inc. recently announced Simply Southern Signature would be moving into the space previously occupied by Williams-Sonoma at 440 W. Duke of Gloucester St.

The store opened Saturday.

Steve Haigh, shop manager of both Simply Southern Signature Store and The Campus Shop, said the store would be opened until the end of the year as a holiday pop-up shop.

“CW approached us about filling up the spot where Williams-Sonoma was, that way there’s not an empty storefront,” Haigh said. “We’re filling up what was a vacant storefront.”

The store will carry brand items to include Simply Southern, Peace Frogs, Puppie Love, Live Oak and William & Mary apparel and gifts.

He added the store’s first week has gone well. The shop has already seen locals trickling in and out to check out the new merchandise.

Simply Southern Signature Store is currently having various sales, from 40% off items to buy-one, get-one free on Peace Frog and William & Mary t-shirts.

The store is also set to have a Simply Southern event on Dec. 10 from noon to 3 p.m. One of the brand’s Jeeps will be parked out front, along with free giveaways during that time period.

“We’re glad to see something in here again,” Haigh said.

As for what will occupy the space after the end of the year, Haigh said the decision is up to the Colonial Williamsburg real estate team.

“We’d like to welcome everybody and invite people to come check us out,” Haigh said.
