Know before you go: VDOT’s list of weekly lane closures

Drivers in Hampton Roads can expect closures on water crossings, interstates and notable detours for the week of Sept. 20-26.

This list covers full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and single-lane closures at the bridge-tunnels and the Berkley, Coleman, High Rise and James River bridges.

Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.

Bridges & Tunnels

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures westbound Sept. 22 and 24 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, I-664:

  • Single-lane closures southbound on Sept. 21-24 starting as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Single-lane closures northbound on Sept. 21 and 23 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Berkeley Bridge, I-264

  • Three brief, intermittent stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes each, on Sept. 20, beginning as early as 3 p.m. to as late as 7 p.m. at the following locations:
    • I-264 in both directions at the Berkley Bridge and approaching the Downtown Tunnel
    • On-ramp to I-264 west from Market Street
    • On-ramp to I-264 west from City Hall Avenue
    • On-ramp to I-264 west from Tidewater Drive
    • On-ramp to I-264 east from W. Berkley Avenue
    • On-ramp to I-264 east from I-464 north

James River Bridge, Route 17:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures in both directions on Sept. 21-25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown tunnels):

Go to Elizabeth River Tunnels for maintenance schedules on the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (U.S. 58) and MLK Expressway (Route 164).

I-64 Widening Segment III Project, York County:

  • Single-lane closures on I-64 east and west from Route 199 Lightfoot exit (Exit 234) to Route 199/Humelsine Parkway (Exit 242) Sept. 20-24, starting as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Traffic shift and brief, intermittent stoppages scheduled overnight starting as early as Sept. 20, on I-64 west between Route 143/Camp Peary (Exit 238) and the Route 199/Newman Road, Lightfoot exit (Exit 234)
  • Brief, intermittent stoppages scheduled overnight starting as early as Sept. 22, on I-64 east near Route 143/Camp Peary (Exit 238)
  • A consecutive, long-term full ramp closure and diversion on the existing Route 199 west on-ramp to I-64 west in Lightfoot continues. Westbound traffic on Route 199 follow detour signage in place directing motorists to a new temporary median crossover to access the Route 199 east on-ramp to I-64 west during the closure.
  • A consecutive, long-term lane closure under traffic signal control on Colonial Parkway at the I-64 overpass continues.
  • A consecutive, long-term full ramp closure on Route 143 Merrimac Trail north to I-64 west continues. Traffic will follow detour signage in place directing motorists to the Route 143 south on-ramp to I-64 west during the closure.

I-64 Southside Widening, High Rise Bridge Expansion:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures on I-64 in both directions between South Military Highway (Exit 297) and Greenbrier Parkway (Exit 289):
    • Sept. 21-24 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Sept. 25, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Sept. 26, from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
    • Sept. 27, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-64, Newport News:

  • Double-lane closure with brief intermittent slow rolls on I-64 east, near the Denbigh Boulevard overpass, on Sept. 24 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, Norfolk/Virginia Beach:

  • Alternating, multi-lane closures in both directions on I-264 between Newtown Road (Exit 15) and Witchduck Road (Exit 16) on Sept. 20-25 starting as early as 7 p.m., with more than two lanes closed no earlier than 9 p.m., through 5 a.m.
  • Alternating, mobile lane closures on I-64 east at the I-264 interchange on Sept. 20-25 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Ongoing nightly closures and detours on Grayson Road at South Witchduck Road. Click here for more information.

I-564, Norfolk:

  • On I-564 between Norfolk Naval Station Gate 3 and Terminal Boulevard Eastbound:
    • Single-lane closure eastbound on Sept. 21 from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
    • Single-lane closure eastbound on Sept. 22 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Slow rolls with brief, intermittent stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes eastbound on Sept. 22 from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.
    • Consecutive double-lane closures eastbound from Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. to Sept. 28 at noon.
    • Single-lane closure eastbound on Sept. 26-27 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • On I-564 between Norfolk Naval Station Gate 3 and Terminal Boulevard Westbound:
    • Double-lane closures westbound on Sept. 21 and Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Double-lane closures westbound on Sept. 22-23 from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. the following day
    • Slow rolls with brief, intermittent stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes westbound on Sept. 22 from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.
    • Consecutive double-lane closure westbound from Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. to Sept 28 at 4 a.m.
    • Slow rolls with brief, intermittent stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes westbound on Sept. 26-27 from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.
I-95, Emporia:
  • Full closure of off-ramp from I-95 north to Route 58 east (Exit 11A) on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Jamestown-Scotland Ferry:

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry may experience reductions in capacity and service outages due to predicted high tides on early Sept. 19 through the late afternoon on Sept. 20.

Motorists are advised to expect potential delays and use the Route 17 James River Bridge as an alternate route.

From the Surry Side:
• Take Route 10 to Route 258 to the James River Bridge (Route 17);
• Follow signs for Route 64 West. Exit onto Route 199 toward Williamsburg; and
• Follow to Route 31 (Jamestown Road).

From the Jamestown Side:
• Take Route 31 to Route 199. Make a right onto Route 199;
• Merge onto Route 64 East. Follow to the James River Bridge exit;
• After traveling over the bridge make a right onto Route 258,
a right onto Route 10; and,
• Follow Route 10 to the Town of Surry traffic signal.
