Local businesses throughout Williamsburg, James City and York counties may get some unexpected visitors throughout the month of September.

The Greater Williamsburg Business Council has launched their COVID Kind campaign to help promote health and safety throughout the localities.

Council staff will stop by member businesses to witness them practicing social distancing, wearing masks, and using hand sanitizer. Businesses that are found following safety precautions will also be given a sticker and a “COVID Kind Business” window cling.

Businesses will also be entered to win a gift basket filled with items from local shops and establishments. The drawing will be aired on Facebook Live on Oct. 2.

“The COVID Kind campaign goal is to create a culture of care and compliance for our community to assist in propelling the local economy forward,” Terry Banez, CEO of the Business Council, wrote in an email.

Banez said the campaign was created by the Greater Williamsburg Business Council after The Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance signed on to William & Mary’s Healthy Together Community Commitment in early August.

The Business Council is also teaming up with LEAD Greater Williamsburg. Last year, LEAD’s Class of 2019’s community project was “WMBG Kind,” with the goal of spreading kindness through acts of service.

“The hope was that these acts would have a ripple effect throughout our community,” said Carolyn Keurajian, chairwoman of LEAD, in a news release posted. “In the wake of COVID-19, there could be no better time to revisit the ideals of this project. Be kind by wearing a mask, washing your hands, and social distancing as best you can.”
