Know before you go: VDOT’s list of weekly lane closures

Drivers in Hampton Roads can expect closures on water crossings, interstates and notable detours for the week of Aug. 16-22.

This list covers full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and single-lane closures at the bridge-tunnels and the Berkley, Coleman, High Rise and James River bridges.

Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.

Bridges & Tunnels

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64:

  • Single-lane closures westbound on Aug. 17-19 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m
HRBT Expansion Project:

Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, I-664:

  • Single-lane closures northbound on Aug. 16 and Aug. 20 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Single-lane closures southbound on Aug. 17-20 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.High Rise Bridge, I-64:

Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown tunnels):

Go to Elizabeth River Tunnels for maintenance schedules on the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (U.S. 58) and MLK Expressway (Route 164).

I-64 Widening Project, York County:

  • Single-lane closures on I-64 east and west from Route 199 Lightfoot exit (Exit 234) to Route 199/Humelsine Parkway (Exit 242) Aug. 16-20, starting as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m..
  • Brief, intermittent stoppages on I-64 west approximately 1 mile east of Route 199/Lightfoot (Exit 234) Aug. 19-21, starting after midnight each night.
  • Lane closures under flagger control on Lakeshead Drive at the I-64 overpass intermittently throughout the week of Aug. 18-21, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • A consecutive, long-term full ramp closure and diversion on the existing Route 199 west on-ramp to I-64 west in Lightfoot continues. Westbound traffic on Route 199 follow detour signage in place directing motorists to a new temporary median crossover to access the Route 199 east on-ramp to I-64 west during the closure.
  • A consecutive, long-term lane closure under traffic signal control on Colonial Parkway at the I-64 overpass continues.
  • A consecutive, long-term full ramp closure on Route 143 Merrimac Trail north to I-64 west continues. Traffic will follow detour signage in place directing motorists to the Route 143 south on-ramp to I-64 west during the closure.

I-64 Southside Widening, High Rise Bridge Expansion:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures on I-64 in both directions between South Military Highway (Exit 297) and Greenbrier Parkway (Exit 289):
    • Aug. 17-20, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Aug. 21, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Aug. 22, from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
    • Aug. 23, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m
  • Full closure of the off-ramp (Exit 296) from I-64 west to George Washington Highway on Aug. 18-19 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Continuous detour on Shell Road at the I-64 overpass through Aug. 24. Click here for more information.

I-64 Express Lanes:

  • Full closure of I-64 Express Lanes in both directions on Aug. 20 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, Norfolk/Virginia Beach:

  • Alternating, multi-lane closures in both directions on I-264 between Newtown Road (Exit 15) and Witchduck Road (Exit 16) on Aug. 16-21 starting as early as 7 p.m., with three lanes closed no earlier than 9 p.m.
  • Ongoing nightly closures and detours on southbound Newtown Road at the I-264 interchange, South Witchduck Road northbound, and Grayson Road at South Witchduck Road. Click here for more information.

I-564, Norfolk:

  • On I-564 westbound between Norfolk Naval Station Gate 3 and Terminal Boulevard: Double-lane closures on Aug. 17-21 from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.
  • Brief, intermittent stoppages lasting up to 15 minutes each on Aug. 19-21 from 10 a.m to 2 a.m. the following day
