The Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, a vocational school near the shipyard, can now offer degrees.

The shipbuilding company this week announced the school plans to offer students associate degrees in applied sciences including maritime technology with focus areas such as maintenance electrician, marine designer and nuclear test technician.

The school currently offers its students the opportunity to get associate or bachelor degrees at Thomas Nelson Community College, Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University, according to the news release.

This accreditation lets the Apprentice School offer degrees solely through the school.

“This is an historic milestone for The Apprentice School,” Xavier Beale, Newport News Shipbuilding’s vice president of trades, said in a prepared statement. “Our ability to offer academic degrees deepens our commitment to workforce development and will open new opportunities for our company to help to meet the ever-growing demand for skilled workers in our region.”

The final degree program approval is expected later this year.
