After months of being closed, the York County Public Library is finally creating a service for patrons to check out items.
“Our process is similar to the ‘curbside to go’ service you see at local restaurants,” said Kevin Smith, library director, in a news release. “Our staff is excited about interacting with the public again while practicing social distancing and other safety measures.”
York County announced Thursday the public library would begin implementing the first phase of its reopening plan on June 1.
During Phase 1, the Tabb library will offer curbside pick-up of books, DVDs and other material items from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every weekday. Patrons can use York County Public Library’s online catalog to request items and will be notified when their items are ready to be picked up.
When arriving at the Tabb Library for pick-up, patrons should turn right as they enter the parking lot and follow a path of orange cones. There will be six parking spaces marked for curbside pick-up. Signs will be posted around the spaces with instructions for notifying staff of the patron’s arrival.
The Tabb and Yorktown library branches also opened book drops on May 18 for patrons to return materials that had been checked out prior to the library’s closing.
“We greatly appreciate the care our patrons have given these materials for the past several weeks,” Smith said. “All items that have been returned are in excellent condition and have obviously been well cared for.”
The returned items are quarantined for three days and then checked back into the library system. No fines or late fees were charged to patrons during the libraries’ closing. The book drops will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. every weekday.
While the library facility remains closed, the digital collection and research resources are still available online. If a patron needs assistance with those resources, they can call the Tabb Library at 757-890-5100 or the Yorktown Library at 757-890-3377.
