Two people were killed following a crash in York County Monday.
At around 1:41 a.m., a driver reported there was a vehicle and tree on fire on Colonial Parkway, K-17, halfway between Cheatham Annex and Queens Lake, said Jason Flood, chief ranger for the Colonial National Historical Park.
The vehicle ran off road before crashing into a large oak tree; the vehicle caught fire. Two people were found dead inside the car, Flood wrote in an email.
The parkway was closed during the investigation and cleanup until 6 a.m. Monday, Flood said.
“The NPS (National Park Service) is the lead investigating agency for this incident within concurrent jurisdiction, York County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police’s Crash Team assisted,” he wrote in an email. “The investigation is still ongoing to confirm the suspected identities of the victims and to determine the cause.”
