Colonial Williamsburg Foundation announced Tuesday the Williamsburg Lodge would close May 1 and all previous closures are extended through May 31 due to coronavirus concerns.
Previously, the foundation had extended closures through April 30.
“We are looking forward to reopening the Historic Area, Art Museums, hotels and restaurants, and are actively preparing by developing plans which include enhanced health and safety protocols,” Cliff Fleet, the foundation’s president and CEO, said in a prepared statement. “Our overriding objective is to protect the health of our employees, visitors, and members of the community, so the timing will be guided by government and public health officials.”
Most of the Williamsburg Lodge hourly employees will get full pay and benefits through May 9 before being furloughed, according to the foundation’s news release. The furloughed employees who live in Colonial Williamsburg housing will have May rent waived.
The Williamsburg Lodge’s kitchen will continue operating for food donations and the Governor’s Inn will serve as emergency housing for the community.
In addition, employees working in the Historic Area, Art Museums, operations and other areas in person or remotely will not be impacted by the expanded closure.
